Personally, that's never been my experience with that game. It makes you feel like most of the time exploring it's not worth the hassle. And the upgrades themselves are always so varied that you never really know what you're going to get (grubs, charms, shortcuts, nail ores, etc.)
The game is hard enough as it is so anything that will upgrade your character is totally worth your time. I personally think Hollow Knight does this the best. While Ocarina of Time isnt nearly as impressive of a game, the things you discover by adventuring out include everything from fairy fountains to grottos to poes to skultullas to heart pieces to songs to characters you can trade masks with.
